5/19/17 – An annual celebration for a hometown legend returns this weekend with a new name. The Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee is now the Dixieland Plus Jazz Festival Honoring Bunny Berigan. The famous trumpet player born Roland Bernard Berigan grew up in Fox Lake from the time his family moved there when he was one-year-old. As an adult, he moved to New York and played alongside some of the world’s most famous jazz musicians, including Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. Organizer Julie Flemming says a graveside service for Berigan that had traditionally been held on Sunday will instead be on Saturday this year. The Rev. Al Townsend will lead the service at St. Mary’s Annunciation Cemetery at 10am. For a second year, Flemming says there will be Sunday morning Dixieland Jazz Services at First Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam at 8am and 10:30am. The festival kicks off today with a free 4 pm concert at Mullin’s Drive-In. That is followed by music tonight at the American Legion. On Saturday and Sunday, the festival moves to the Fox Lake Community Center. More information is online at bunny-berigan-jazz-jubilee-dot-com.
