Born Reintroducing Bill To Give Protected Status To County Jailers

(Beaver Dam) State Representative Mark Born says he will be reintroducing a bill that will give protected status to county jailers. Protected status is given to state workers in high-risk professions.

The bill will give county jailers benefits similar to state prison workers. That includes the ability to retire earlier and duty disability insurance, which is difficult for those in high-risk jobs to obtain in the open marketplace. Born had brought the bill up during the legislative session last year but it was help up by Senator Duey Stroebel.

The Beaver Dam Republican says he has more optimism this year that the bill will be passed. Born says a new committee will review the bill which bodes well. He adds that the chairman of the Corrections and Judiciary Committee has assured him that a hearing will be scheduled to discuss the matter. Born says that previous versions of the bill have faced similar fates in the legislative process.
