(Beaver Dam) Youth in the Beaver Dam area interested in playing football have an opportunity to sign up. During a recent appearance WBEV’s Community Comment, Player Safety Coach Curt Gruenewold says that the program will be doing something new this year for sign ups. He says there will be an online registration process, although the site is not up currently Gruenewold said it should be up shortly. The groups Facebook page will announce when the registration website is live. Gruenewold says the change to paperless signups has been long requested by parents to make the process easier. Last year the 3rd and 4th grade program made the switch to flag instead of tackle. High School Football Coach Steve Kuenzi says there has been a nationwide movement to make the game safer for younger athletes. He says there are a number of studies available on what is the correct age to play tackle football and their goal was to focus more on the fundamentals rather than putting on pads to hit one another with. The youth football season gets underway in August and concludes in early October. The registration fee for fifth and sixth grade tackle is $100 and $50 for third and fourth grade flag.
