Beaver Dam Woman Charged For Shooting Her Boyfriend

(Beaver Dam) Cash bond was set at $2,000 Monday for a Beaver Dam woman accused of shooting her boyfriend. Tonya Diniz was charged with a felony count of Second Degree Reckless Injury by Use of a Dangerous Weapon and a misdemeanor charge of Intentionally Pointing a Firearm at a Person. On Sunday morning, Beaver Dam police were dispatched to an apartment building at 106 Lakecrest Drive at 9am. Officers found a 20-year-old male lying on an air mattress in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the groin. He allegedly told police that Diniz had shot him, adding that the two were not fighting and that he did not believe the act to be intentional. According to the criminal complaint, the victim later said Diniz was upset because she had found out he had been speaking to another woman but maintained that the shooting was not done purposefully. When questioned, Diniz reportedly said she shot her boyfriend after confronting him about texts he sent to another woman. Diniz allegedly said she pointed the gun at his groin area and as she knelt on the bed it accidentally went off. The victim was first transported to Beaver Dam Community Hospital before being flown by helicopter to U.W. Hospital in Madison. He is expected to recover. The incident comes a few weeks after Beaver Dam experienced its first shooting death in decades. If convicted, the 28-year-old Diniz is facing 13 years in prison. A judge will decide next week if there is enough evidence to order a trial.
