(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam Scholarship Foundation will be holding it’s 20th Annual Golf Classic this September. The event helps the foundation raise money to cover administrative costs so all of their funds generated through their endowment goes directly to student scholarships. On a recent Community Comment members of the BDSF board talked a little about the history of the scholarship. Board member Steven Vessey spoke to a unique aspect of this particular scholarship, saying that it is 50% based on need and 50% based on merit. Kids fill out applications which are reviewed and scored based on their need as well as their academic achievements. The applications sent to an outside organization that matches the applications up to the proper scholarship, meaning that it is an unbiased process involved with getting these scholarships.
Since the start of the Beaver Dam Scholarship Foundation, the group has awarded scholarships to 600 students, with $190,000 being awarded to 28 students last year alone. The foundation has raised a large amount of money with help from the community, but board member Nate Dassler says that is only half the story. Through the past year the foundation has awarded $3,502,000. Often times they are asked how much of the awarded funds are actually used, as some students may not actually complete their education plans. Dassler says that through his research he has determined that less than 6% of funds awarded were not used, meaning that nearly 95% off all awarded scholarship money has been used for it’s intended purpose of higher education.
The 20th Annual Golf Classic will feature between 26 and 30 teams of four taking on 18 holes of golf at Old Hickory Golf Club in Beaver Dam. Entry into the golf classic includes 18 holes of golf with cart, a hole-in-one event, access to silent and live auctions, as well as a provided lunch and dinner. There will be a 50/50 raffle, betting holes, a chicken fling, as well as a drawing for a brand new set of golf clubs. The 20th Annual Golf Classic is happening Monday, September 10th, with lunch and sign in at 11am.
