Beaver Dam Lake Dam Closure Leads To Fish Kill

6/19/17 – The closure of the dam on Beaver Dam Lake last week apparently led to a large number of fish being killed. Several pictures and comments appeared on social media Friday prompting the mayor to respond in a Facebook post over the weekend. Mayor Becky Glewen said the flow of the water was stopped so that the concrete could be poured for the culvert replacement project on Cooper Street. The dam was opened Friday morning to increase the flow of water. Our calls to the Department of Natural Resources late Friday were not immediately returned but Glewen says city officials have been in contact and will meet with the DNR to determine how the river can be reduced to minimum flow without hurting aquatic life so the project can be completed. No estimate yet on how many fish were killed.
