Beaver Dam Fire Officials Suggest Fire Safety Tips As Weather Turns Colder

(Beaver Dam) With frigid temperatures moving in this weekend, a few reminders about fire prevention from local officials. Beaver Dam Fire Department Public Education Coordinator Russ Johnson says use common sense when dealing with frozen pipes and never use a blowtorch to thaw them out. If you are going to use an appliance, he suggests using heat gun or hair dryer. If you are going to crank up the space heaters as the thermometer drops, Johnson says avoid overloading your electrical outlets. He says the best rule of thumb is to avoid plugging space heaters into power strips and extension cords all together and instead plug the devices directly into a wall outlet. If you do use an extension cord, make sure it is at least as thick or thicker than the cord of the space heater.
