Battle of Iwo Jima Program On WBEV

11/11/17 – Saturday is Veterans Day. WBEV observed the occasion on Thursday with our annual Tribute To Veterans from the Beaver Dam Veterans Center. One of our guests was radio broadcaster Jerry Stewart who produces three nationally-syndicated programs: One Moment In American and You Were There along with weekly video podcasts and specialty programming around Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Stewarts program for this Veterans Day is called “The Battle For Iwo Jima.” In the program he interviews three of the Marine veterans who were at the battle, including the Marine who carried the first flag to the top of Mount Suribachi. Stewart notes that Iwo Jima was the deadliest battle in the history of the US Marines with 24-thousand lost over 42 months. One-third of the Marines killed in World War Two died in 28 days on Iwo Jima. Stewart says when US soldiers hit the beach they had no idea it was a set-up and that so many lives would not even make it on shore. He says, in the program, the veterans describe what the flag means to them and how it gave them the courage to keep going. The Battle for Iwo Jima can be heard on AM1430 WBEV Saturday morning at 11am.
