(Ashippun) An Ashippun man who seriously injuring a woman in a parking lot last July will spend one year in jail. Lawrence Laven pled no contest Friday to one felony count of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Injury Second Offense and had a second felony charge dismissed.
The incident occurred at the BP fueling station on Highway 67 in the Town of Ashippun. Arresting officers say the 59-year-old smelled of alcohol; had watery, bloodshot eyes; slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet often-times leaning on the bumper of the squad car to maintain balance.
Witnesses say he was just “out of it” when he reversed from a parking stall and slammed into another vehicle, briefly pinning a woman. She fell to the ground and witnesses immediately came to her aid. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Laven admitted to feeling “loopy” and said the medications he was taking were related to a recent oral surgery. A preliminary breath test registered a point-one-six (.16).
In addition to a year in jail with work release privileges, Laven was placed on probation for three years, must maintain absolute sobriety, lost his drivers license for two years followed by two years of blowing into a tube to start his car.
